NOTES FROM OVERSEAS

SITE MAP

"Well, I keep forgetting my camera at the meetings, but I did finally remembered it at work. This pic is during our monthly maintenance on one of the radar systems we maintain here (I am the one with my hand in the compartment). The other picture is of the warning on the outside of the radar, the one in the manual says "death on contact." There are 4 total I am responsible for maintenance and repair on. It keeps me pretty busy, and if one goes down, I'm there till we fix it. I spent 30 hours straight at one about a month ago. Then I slept for 13 hours and got called out to another one. All in all I love my job though. I will be going to the promotion board next month. I've got a lot of studing to do.

The group has almost ran out of blue and green tea light candles if you can find any. They tend to be the easiest to control. I could use a small stone for grounding if you can find one."

"I haven't been able to contact many people because the internet has been messed up, but would like to let you know that I am of the Celtic tradition. I am primarily a solitary practitioner over here. The group that is here sometimes meets up and sometimes doesn't. If you can, I could use some herbs, that is what is needed here right now. Anything you send I will have packed in a box when I go to leave and leave it with the Chaplain for the incoming Pagans, so that they will have something to start off with."

"Thank you so much for the care package! The books have been added to our spiritual bookshelf for the pagan folks here in Baghdad. I will see if any individuals would like a personal package and I will ask around and see what folks want/need. Thanks again!"

I would like to thank you for sending the boxes over here to Iraq. The stuff will come in handy and I will try to pass out as much as I can as soon as I can find some more wiccans/pagans. I have been working on becoming a DFGL here at Camp Ramadi the only problem is can't find any wiccans and pagans. I have tried everywhere the few that were here with me got sent to another base. So please send your energy for more to come so I may help in every means possible. It is a great thing y'all.

I have a small wish list its a personal one for my personal studies if possible. I am looking for:

1 golden brown amber stone * 1 amethyst * 1 moss agate

1 quartz crystal * 1 green adveturine * 2 ft of 1/2 inch blue ribbon

1 small astrolgy calander

None of these need to be big and I thank yall so much everyone of y'all that help us out over here yall are a true blessing of Lord and Lady. And may the Goddess bless y'all with love and light and may the dragons protect you forever."

"Here is a story that was emailed to me, and I wanted to share it with you...

" 'Recently I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport. They had announced the departure. Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the mother said, "I love you and I wish you enough".

The daughter replied, "Mom, our life together has been more than enough.. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Mom".

They kissed and the daughter left. The mother walked over to the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see she wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on her privacy but she welcomed me in by asking, ? "Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?".

Yes, I have," I replied. "Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?".

"I am old and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is - the next trip back will be for my funeral," she said.

"When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, 'I wish you enough'. May I ask what that means?".

She began to smile. "That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone". She paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail and she smiled even more.. ?"When we said , 'I wish you enough', we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them"? Then turning toward me, she shared the following as if she were reciting it from memory:

I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.

I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.

I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.

I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.

I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.

I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.

I wish you enough hello's to get you through the final good-bye.

She then began to cry and walked away.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them but then an entire life to forget them.

* Only if you wish send this to the people you will never forget and remember to send it back to the person who sent it to you. If you don't send it to anyone it may mean that you are in such a hurry that you have forgotten your friends.

TAKE TIME TO LIVE...' "

"To all my friends and loved ones, I WISH YOU ENOUGH!"

"I would just like to thank everyone in the Wiccan Interfaith Council for all of the supplies that we have received over here in Iraq, it is hard to put into words how much we appreciate it not only for the supplies which are hard to get over here but for the fact that there are others back home who are thinking about us and support us."

"You help with materials and supplies have made this employment more bearable. I find so many who are treading the path for the first time while on deployments. Most have been practicing for a year or less. I only have a short time now but I type up a word document that you can put to your web site. Also attached is a picture of myself. I will get them from others in the group to send to you also."

"Thanks so much for all you do for us!!! I received mine and shared the books and gifts, thank you very much. There is several new pagans I have met on the ship who really loved the package and helped them farther along the way to discovering thier paths.

May Thor grant you strength and courage on your way,
And May Loki give you laughter as you go.
May Freya and Freyr shine through you and blessings go with you."

"Hi, I received the package your group sent. And I must say thank you very much!! It was wonderful! I received some tarot cards and some books on tarot which was really awesome because I am not to knowledgeable in that area.

I am here in Kuwait for the long run. We are not certain what when we will be returning. But I can't complain much about being here. It is finally starting to cool down a little bit. I haven’t found a group here at Arifjan yet. If you know of any POC's or groups can you shoot them my way PLZ! It would greatly be appreciated."

"I have been deployed for several months now and have five more to go. I am a practicing Druid of 12 years and am having a somewhat I’m having a difficult time getting materials to read and I have nothing to conduct any rituals with. I would have my wife send them, but she is Christian and although more than willing to help, she has no idea what I need even if explained to her... LOL. So any help would be great. Thank you!"

"Thank you for your support, and energy. You guys are wonderful! Blessed Be*"

Two Soldiers - IRAQ, August2007:

"I am a Pagan soldier currently deployed in Iraq, and Project We Care has helped a lot in getting Pagan religious supplies to the open circle in Rustamyiah. As the Group Leader for the Open Circle I would like to say thank you to both Project We Care and Associated Media for such a good article and the support." (see article on the Project We Care main from Lance and Graal)

"Yes, I would like to thank the Wiccan Interfaith Council International and all of you who do support us here. This is my third tour here. Many of our Circles here in Iraq and Afganistan are supported from volunteers like this organization...I would like to say once again, Thank You."

Female Soldier - ship, August 2007:

"I haven't received your box yet but one of the solitaries in my group received one from you and from what I saw it was awesome. He shared some of what he got and I wanted to write to say thank you. I am also writing because I am leaving this ship soon and wanted to be added to the list as a solitary."

Soldier - ship, August 2007:

"We received the package you sent 3 days ago. I brought it to the Pagan/Wiccan services. Everyone was thrilled to see what you sent us and wanted to say thank you very much. It makes me proud to be out here knowing that people back home care and are supporting us.

May Odin grant you wisdom and knowledge of your path,

May Thor grant you strength and courage on your way,

And May Loki give you laughter as you go.

May Freya and Freyr shine through you and blessings go with you."

Female Soldier - Iraq, August 2007:

"Hello again, Thank you for the e-mail. I have not received a package yet, I will keep looking for it though. Things are getting pretty antsy here. We are due to leave in the next few months...eeeeeee I can't wait to get home!

But the Army in all its great wisdom has decided that if a person does not have 24 months (2 years......yes 2 years) left on their contract then that are not allowed to move onto their next assignment. Which is REALLLLLLy bad news for the people in my unit...who were not even stationed here to begin with! So this means that the people who left their families and all their belongings at their last duty station (with the understanding that they would be returned there when this was over) will have to stay in their base.

The base is not a happy, or even acceptable place to be, so bad that some of the soldiers who work here have decided to stay in Iraq. What makes my situation a bit more ...pressing is the fact that I reenlisted to go to another base. I would not have stayed in the Army if it wasn't in my contract. (this sort of contract is supposed to mean that you will stay at the contracted place for at least 12 months) I was only there for about 5 months.

I am trying to fight it since I do have a contract but, fight Uncle Sam on what he promises verses what he delivers is a tough battle. Please send some energy and keep us in your thoughts. I will try my best to be optomistic throug this rough time.

Thanks again for the suppport and I can't wait for the package!!"

Soldier - male, July 2007:

"Thank you very much for the package! I got it today and everything was 100% intact. I thank you for everything. As soon as I opened it I could smell the sage and I felt like I was at home. Thank you again for thinking of us over here and for your support."

Female Soldier - Iraq, July 2007:

"I am rather excited to be in touch with a pagan group that actually writes and supports soldiers.

Being a women…it's just like being a woman in any other male-dominated work force, only the Army doesn’t really handle complaints of harassment(The girl will always just be a trouble maker, whinier, or she's just out to slam someone, they like to wait until it becomes full blown assault.) Every day life as a woman in the army is challenging but not always in a bad way.

The Army does recognize Paganism (in almost all forms) as a religion but it is not exactly accepted most of the time. I have learned to simply not to explain anything or go into to detail when people see my paper work and ask the inevitable question, “What’s Wicca?”

My response is usually a very broad and general statement of “It’s an Earth base religion” and I leave it at that. That’s about the time strange looks and whispers begin. Usually there is someone around who knows just enough about pagan religions to be callously judgmental.

Its not all bad, some people are simply curious. Some people are accepting and look only to the person not just one aspect of their personality. So there no horrible persecution or anything like that just discomfort and non-acceptance. Like the rest of the world I guess. Some people are not so great, but I know where I stand and that's good enough for me. Regardless of the throngs of christians that continuously try to convert me (save my soul) and send me to church and just can't accept anyone who has different beliefs than theirs (even other christians).

The Chaplains……….they mean well but their discomfort/disdain/fear/hatred (whatever it is) always comes shining through eventually. Usually with in the first five minutes of them finding out that I am Pagan! I have had Chaplains simply walk away, and my current chaplain - he really does try very hard, but myself and the two other pagans in my unit all get the same vibe from him. He just can’t seem to have a normal conversation with any of us. It’s really comical but we try to keep the jesting to a minimum.

So the support isn’t exactly bountifully for pagan soldiers, that's why I especially appreciate groups like yours, who don’t just say they support us, or offer a military discount but don't ship to APO’s. Thank you so much for the support and actually writing me.

Its tough being in Iraq...but it’s a generally safe post. We do get mortared every now and then but its not as dangerous as some places over here. The toughest part is being away from my family and friends for so long.

Just to clarify, I do not agree with this war or our presence in the middle east, but if soldiers didn't do what they were told, America wouldn’t be a free country (despite all of its flaws). I am proud to serve my countrywomen and men, but will be moving on to bigger and better things as soon as my current contract is up.

It's really hot here - even at night it can be above 90, but on clear evenings it seems like you can see every start that out there! Thank you so much!"

wazzup from Kuwait, July 2007:

"Hello! I am a Wiccan station in Kuwait, But I spend most of my time in Iraq. I meet a few Pagans and Wiccans. There is a circle in Kuwait. I go to it when ever I get a chance. I just wanted to say thank you! THANK YOU!!! Thanks for what you are doing."

Bagdad, June 2007:

"We have several different faiths and beliefs that attend our weekly meetings. We have 3 different sects of Wiccans, a Druid, occasionally we have our Buddhist show up, a Atheist, and I myself follow the Shamanistic path.

It presents a unique opportunity for several people that we have that are new to the faith, as they are able to see several different views of what is out there, and take what works best for them. We have meetings every Monday, movie nights on Wed, and then we hold at least quarterly ceremonies.

We also have several people that are starting out in the craft, and this provides them with so many different opportunities, of course reading materials would be great, and one thing that we do is the first Monday of every month we do a guided meditation. We had been looking at trying to acquire some CD's or tapes that had a meditation on them so we could all participate in the meditation instead of one of the 4-5 of us reading one out.

We of course can always use supplies for studying, as well as some easy and more advanced materials for crafting. My self personally I do a lot of gazing, dousing, and candle magick. I also do a lot of work with herbs, but for me that comes naturally. I have harvested some of the native plants around here that I have no idea what they are, but being in the desert they have a tendency to speak to me and let me know what they do on there own.

Some of our newer members are still working on building there altars, so some materials for that would of course be helpful in that aspect. Blessed Be!"

Iraq, June 2007:

"How does this day find you? It finds me adjusting to the heat of another summer over hear in Iraq. Oh, by the by Blessed Solstice. I find myself trying to get another group gathered after being switched bases. Right now there are four of us that gather when our schedules allow. Different shifts, being on patrol or an out station being the reasons. So we have networked as a group of friends. I happen to have been the only one to bring a library and battle box of supplies(foot locker). One of the group is new. But he has impressed me with his knowledge of Reiki? Did I spell it correctly?"

Camp Base, (undisclosed), June, 2007:

"Hi, thank you so much for taking interest. I'll tell you a bit of myself. I have a dog and a cat who I miss terribly and are back at my home in the states. Many days, I get back to my room and email is the last thing on my mind. Its been quiet here, good thing. My days are long, usually start around 7 and end about 7 and are about the same each day. Luckily, I am in a support position, and work in an air conditioned office. I am a computer tech, hard/software. I spend most of my days in an office but there are days I do go on convoys. Mostly to move equipment or to be the extra personal that’s needed. Granted, convoys can be a bit scary but most routes are safe. It’s nice to get away from the camp and see different places."

Ship, (undisclosed), May, 2007:

"I would first like to thank you for taking your time to read this. I found Wicca in a quest to find a centering for myself. I could feel something different from the moment I really studied what Wicca was about and what it means. I found Wicca roughly about a year 6 months, it has definitely opened me and changed my life for the good. But with everything it is always best to seek guidance when you are unsure about things, I find myself in such a dilemma right now.

As you can see by the email I am in the military, currently deployed, though I cannot say where. My question is, is it possible to be a good Wiccan believer when your job depends so much on taking rather than giving? Is it possible to be a good Wiccan when your job calls for levels of selfishness?

For example, today as I sat on the flight deck enjoying the sun rise, the one thing that I get to enjoy on my days at sea, I noticed about 2 dozen bags floating by, as I looked closer towards the lower portion of the boat, I could see a group of the crew throwing theses bags over the side, when I later inquired about it I them found out that is how we get rid of our trash. This deeply bothered me, both as a wiccan and as a humanitarian, to see such blatant disregard for life we share this world with.

I have a few years left before I am able to get out, that is why I seek this guidance, how do I balance the two and still do right by my beliefs? There's so much I see that is wrong, so much that goes against the [Wiccan] beliefs, but how do I change what I do to keep with my beliefs in such a pressing situation, when most of it is out of my control? Again that you so much for your help. Thank you.."

So volunteer to support our Wiccan, Pagan, Heathen, and Witches 'over there'! Please...take the time to get involved!
